May 12 -- Publication Day!Printer Friendly View
The Authors …And so the grand adventure begins! The bus pulled up in front of my house—a gleaming gargantuan thing that practically blotted out the sun. We went on board and found it to be a veritable pleasure palace, a miracle of rare device. It has a full kitchen, WiFi and cable, and three large-screen TVs. This means both Doug and I and the driver can all be watching different movies (though we are strongly encouraging the driver not to do this.)

Our first stop was Princeton. Premiere space had been reserved for the bus directly in front of the store. We were a little concerned as we walked in (as we always are at the start of a new tour) but found a really great crowd inside, especially for a weekday lunch hour. Many people, it seemed, played hooky to meet us. We signed books for well over a hundred people.

Next came a hairy drive from Princeton all the way to Hingham, Massachusetts, just outside Boston. It was amusing, as we crawled along the Cross Bronx Expressway, to watch the faces of our fellow motorists turning toward us, agog, at the huge rolling advertisement for Cemetery Dance. Brett, our tour director, kept us well supplied with food, drinks, and proved himself in every way a blessing. Our driver Jerry is not only a calm and expert driver but a fellow banjo player to boot—clearly a mark of a cultivated man.

Traffic was dreadful along the first part of the route and we ended up arriving an hour late. However the crowd was very patient and everybody waited in good humor. We arrived at 8:00 and again were surprised and pleased to find over 80 people waiting at what was essentially a library venue. After doing our patented dog-and-pony show, we met everyone individually. Lots of people had brought their entire collection of Preston-Child book for signature (a practice we encourage) and by the end of the day or signing hands were tired. Wrapping them around cool martini glasses on the late evening ride to the hotel proved to be quite beneficial.

All in all a most gratifying opening day.
