DAY 9: A Dark Anniversary…

The day began with two more events in Ohio, a state that seems to have commandeered more than its share of Preston-Child attention. First we did an in-studio radio interview at WRRS (thanks, Mark!), followed by a signing at the Cincinnati branch of Joseph-Beth Booksellers.

After the signing we left Ohio and headed to Indianapolis, a surprisingly charming city indeed. The five weary travelers (Doug, myself, my wife, Brent our tour director, and Jerry our driver) were refreshed by a wonderful meal at the St. Elmo steakhouse, where significant quantities of aged, dried beef were washed down with a delightful 1986 Chateau Lynch-Bages. All this profligate excess was in honor of Doug’s birthday. (Tact prohibits me from mentioning the precise age, but no doubt a quick Google search will satisfy the curious…)

The day ended with a talk and signing before some three hundred people at a private club, where I bemoaned the plight of second-billed joint authors and Doug waxed eloquent about his recent escapades in (and escape from) Florence, Italy.

We also learned that Cemetery Dance will debut at No. 2 on the New York Times bestseller list. Outraged, we immediately scoped out the No. 1 novel (see photos)…

The boys disdainfully check out the reprobate author who denied them their rightful No. 1 spot on the Times list
